Come and sing with the Senior Ambassadors

S.A. webgif The Senior Ambassadors men’s chorus, which has been a part of the Rio Grande Valley since 1985, is looking for singers to join their chorus. Senior Ambassadors is composed of men from the Valley and Winter Texan community.

They perform choral music from sacred and semi classical, to pop and country. Starting in January of each year, the group performs live for audiences at various RV parks in the Rio Grande Valley. The group is always looking for men who enjoy singing and invite you to join them at the weekly practice sessions. All levels are welcome.

20040424 MOSTH Exhibit 0003 web Perhaps one of the more interesting museums in the Rio Grande Valley – and mind you, many of the museums in the Valley have a lot of history and are interesting as well – is the Museum of South Texas History in Edinburg. Part of the museum is the 1910 jail.

The old jail was designed in a Spanish Mission Revival style in 1909-1910. It was built along with the Hidalgo County Courthouse, which stood in the County Square nearby. The jail’s walls were made of solid brick, its floors were concrete, and the roof was made of clay tiles on wooden structures.

The festival’s signature Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday will once again mark the start of the holiday season in McAllen, officially transforming the city into the South Pole of Texas.

Brownsville Holiday Village opening November 24

20231202 Brownsville Holiday Village 0013 web The beautifully decorated cottages that adorn Dean Porter Park in Brownsville every holiday season are back. They have been preparing the park for the last few weeks for the 16th season of its Holiday Village in Brownsville. The Holiday Village officially opens on November 24. Each year one or two new ones might be added, so you never know what you might see. Currently there are over 30 fully decorated cottages lining the sidewalks at the park.

For those that are new to the village, Holiday Village is a collection of miniature cottages, each one measuring about 10’ wide x 8’ deep and over 11’ tall. Each one is adorned inside and out with the most whimsical and adorable holiday trimmings. Best viewing is just after the sun sets so you can see the full displays all lit up – although the lights come on at 6 p.m. every evening.

Port Isabel announces tree lighting, holiday parade

20231202 Port Isabel Tree Lighting ALB 0010 web The City of Port Isabel will kick off the 2025 holiday season with their 17th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Hometown Christmas Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 6. The community celebration will be held in the heart of coastal Port Isabel.

Mayor Cantu Jr. and the Port Isabel City Commissioners invite the community to attend and participate in a Port Isabel holiday tradition. Hometown Holiday Parade starts at 6 p.m. and the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree in Beulah Lee Park starts at 7 p.m. The tree lighting will feature performances, vendors, Santa Claus and a bigger and brighter Christmas tree.

McAllen Community Concerts starts season next week

C Street Brass is a brass quartet passionately committed to educating and inspiring the next generation of musicians. C Street Brass’s mission is to connect lovers of the arts from all walks of life around a highly energetic and engaging concert experience. Equally as comfortable with Baroque as they are Broadway, this brass ensemble features five of the most talented, classically trained musicians in the industry. Their concerts encompass a wide variety of genres, ranging from Frank Sinatra to Astor Piazzolla and Billy Joel to George Gershwin, and ensure that every audience member’s musical palate is satisfied.

Spend your Sunday afternoons immersed in arts and music at the UTRGV Concert Series at IMAS, a special series of performances by faculty and students from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Music. Ranging from the romantics to the contemporary with piano, cello, jazz, voice and percussion, these community concerts are immersed in the fine art galleries of the International Music of Art and Science and great for the whole family.

On November 16, visitors can enjoy the UTRGV Opera Theatre: Masquerades, Marriage, and Mischief. The Romantic Cello: Janacek, Jessie Montgomery, and Rachmaninoff will be presented on December 14. UTRGV faculty pianist Dr. Brendan Kinsella and guest artist Dr. Daniel Saenz performs a soulful afternoon of music for violoncello and piano. From Janacek’s dreamy and imaginative “Fairy Tale” to Rachmaninoff”s thrilling Sonata for Violoncello and Piano, this recital is sure to delight and inspire.
